The Umbrella Sky Project | Coral Gables + Miami

You’ve probably come across pictures on your social media that show folks all over the world posing under a canopy of brightly colored umbrellas; An Umbrella Sky. This world renowned art installation was actually inspired by Mary Poppins, & first appeared on the scene in 2012. It was created by Sextafeira Produções, a creative agency in Portugal “focused on turning ideas in reality”. I have to admit, I was throwing hearts at these photos with reckless abandon when I started seeing them pop up in my social feed. (if you saw Wreck it Ralph Breaks the Internet, then you have a pretty good visual right now about what I mean, hah!).

So imagine my excitement when I heard that The Umbrella Sky Project was being installed in Coral Gables, just minutes from me! Needless to say, I was thrilled. I’d seen this installation featured all over the world, in places like Portugal, France & Spain, and now it was coming here to Miami! So I grabbed my friend and we spent the afternoon, strolling, sipping coffee, and snapping photos under the Umbrella Sky. It was lovely. I could have stared up at that thing all day, just like a sky full of stars. #umbrellaskiesinmyeyes

The thing is, not only does it look really cool, it also keeps everyone cool. The shade provided by the umbrella canopy was a relief from the South Florida sun. One of my favorite things about the installation was actually the geometric shapes and shadows that it cast along the walkway below. It was a really neat effect.
